Families for Families

Holly Sultana (age 9) and Family

Supporting Families

‘If you have a child with a disability, the whole family is affected. It can be really hard, we have three children and we want to treat all of them equally. But that means sometimes Holly or Holly’s siblings miss out on doing things.  For example going to the beach – Holly’s wheelchair doesn’t go on the sand and she’s too big now for us to carry her, so the family doesn’t go to the beach now. Even a trip to the cinema, going to the shops or visiting friends can be difficult.’

Seven year old Holly has Arthgryoposis Multiplex which means that her many of the joints in her body are thickened and she can’t bend them. This means she needs to be in a wheelchair.  She lives with her parents Lara and Dan and her sister Jasmine (10) and brother Troy (3).

‘Events like the Family Days and the support groups have also been vital to us as it’s so important to meet other people in a similar situation. It really does relieve some of the stress knowing that you are not the only person going through the challenge of looking after a child with disability. We are still friends with those families now. The Family Days mean that we can all do something together as a family, without any of the children missing out on anything.’

How would you manage with a child with a disability and their siblings? Where would you go for support? Your support will help many more families like the Sultana family, helping them now and in the future.

$30 can go towards the cost of the Family Fun Days so that families like Holly’s can all participate in activities together as a family.
