Locklan Everson (age 5)
Supporting Children

‘Locklan would do things which were so naughty he couldn’t understand that what he was doing was wrong or sometimes even dangerous. He wasn’t toilet trained, even though he was four years old, he struggled to comunicate, his behaviour was out of control. We didn’t know what to do, Locklan was struggling and so were we.’
A year ago life was very different for Locklan and his grandparents Sharon and Neil. Once they had contacted Northcott, Locklan was then diagnosed with autism, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and dyspraxia.
‘I don’t know where we would be without Northcott and in particular Ashley, our Case Manager, she’s our angel. Northcott have worked with Locklan to improve his communication skills and his behaviour so that now we know what to do if he’s upset and he needs to calm down.’
Things have improved so much that Locklan will be going to school next year. Through Northcott’s Transition to School program, Locklan’s therapists liaise with the school to make sure that there are no problems when Locklan arrives at school in January.
What would you do if you couldn’t communicate with your child? What would happen if they couldn’t go to school? With support from donors like you, children with disabilities can get the best start in life, school can mean much more than an education for these children. It means friendships and a feeling of being included and valued.
$35 can go towards a therapist being able to work with schools to ensure that children like Locklan can go to school and make friends.
