May Gibbs

May Gibbs Logo

One of the most substantial bequests to Northcott has been from May Gibbs, the creator of the Gumnut Babies, Flower ImageSnugglepot and Cuddlepie.

May Gibbs was born in England in 1877 and emigrated to Australia in 1881. May's first Australian children's book was published in 1918 and featured the adventures of the two Gumnut Babies.

May Gibbs died in 1969, but her legacy to children with physical disabilities lives on. She bequeathed 50% of the copyright (therefore profit on sales), from the designs of her bush characters, to Northcott. Through her foresight, May Gibbs has helped Northcott assist thousands of children with disabilities and their families throughout NSW.
